Checked Baggage

We have revised our baggage policy to meet our passengers’ varying travel needs. Your baggage allowance will depend on your ticket fare family, Falconflyer membership and final destination.

Our Falcon Gold passengers can enjoy a generous allowance of two checked-in baggage at 32kg each. All Falconflyer members’ Falcon Gold redemption tickets will also enjoy two checked-in baggage at 32kg each.

 

Passengers looking for increased travel flexibility and booked on our Economy Smart and Economy Flex Boutique Fare will enjoy an allowance of two checked-in baggage at 23kg each. Our Falconflyer members’ redemption tickets in Economy class will also enjoy two checked-in baggage at 23kg each.

For our budget travellers, our Economy Light Boutique Fare allow passengers an allowance of one checked-in baggage at 23kg.

 

Exception note for Economy Class passengers

  • Passengers flying from Bahrain, Dammam to Iraq and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates to Morocco and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Lebanon to India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Lebanon, Greece to the Philippines and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates to Egypt, Ethiopia and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying from Iraq to Jeddah, Madinah and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying from Lebanon, Jordan to Morocco and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying from India to Egypt, Iraq and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying from Cyprus to Chennai, Colombo, Delhi, Dhaka, Hyderabad, Kochi, Lahore¸ Manila, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapura and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying from Jordan, Lebanon to  Ethiopia and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying from London, Greece to India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and vice-versa, are allowed 2 checked in pieces at 23 KGs each in all Economy class Boutique Fare.
  • Passengers flying to or from India, Bangladesh,Pakistan or Sri Lanka are allowed two (2) checked-in bags with a maximum weight of 23kgs; boxes will not be accepted as cargo or checked-in baggage.
  • Passengers traveling from Bahrain to Abu Dhabi and vice versa on Economy Light are entitled to hand-baggage only with a maximum weight of 7kg. Passengers traveling on Economy Smart and Economy Flex are entitled to a maximum weight of 25kg and 30kg respectively for checked-in baggage. All Falcon Gold passengers in Falcon Gold Smart and Flex traveling from Bahrain to Abu Dhabi and vice versa are entitled to a maximum check-in baggage of 40kg only.

     

Children and Infants

Children, aged 2 years and older, travelling on Gulf Air operated services, get the same checked baggage allowance as adults plus a child's collapsible stroller/pushchair and a child's car seat.

Infants, aged under 2 years, get a special allowance of one piece of 15 KGs for checked baggage, plus a collapsible stroller/pushchair and an infant car seat. Infants are also entitled to one cabin baggage (maximum dimensions 44 x 35 x 20 cm or 17 x 13 x 7 inches) with a total weight of 3 KGs.

Our Falconflyer Members

Our Falconflyer members will receive additional complimentary baggage allowance as per their membership tier level.

 

Students Travelling on Gulf Air

University students are eligible to one free checked-in bag, not exceeding 23kgs, in addition to their free baggage allowance. Students are required to present a valid university ID card. New students who do not have their student IDs yet will be provided the additional baggage allowance once a valid university acceptance letter and/or student visa is presented at the check-in counter. The additional baggage allowance is only applicable on Gulf Air-operated flights.

Please read this notice, if you have baggage to check in for a flight with Gulf Air.

We would like to inform passengers that Gulf Air assumes no liability for scratches, small cuts and dents or items that protrude from baggage such as wheels, luggage straps and handles, since during the course of normal baggage handling, your baggage may show evidence of wear and tear.

Gulf Air does have liability for loss, delay or major damage to baggage which is limited by international convention. Passengers may declare a higher value to us at the point of check-in and pay the additional charges if they wish.

Passengers may also like to consider taking their own travel insurance or increasing the amount if they consider the contents of their baggage to be of high value. Passengers wishing to check-in items other than conventional baggage must ensure it is adequately packaged. The Company has the right to decline or accept items that are considered to be inadequately packed and protected with no liability.

In line with IATA regulations and the legislation of many countries, should your checked baggage weigh more than 32kg, you will be asked to repack the bag by our Customer Service staff.

Personal Items

In addition to the above free cabin baggage allowance, each customer can carry any of the following personal items without additional charges:

  • A handbag, pocket book, or purse which is appropriate to normal travel dress and is not being used as a container for other items which could be regarded as baggage.
  • A laptop/ personal computer
  • An overcoat, wrap or blanket
  • An umbrella or walking stick
  • A small camera or pair of binoculars
  • A reasonable amount of reading matter
  • Infant's food for consumption during the flight
  • A fully collapsible wheelchair (please note that this will be loaded in the hold at the departure gate)
  • A pair of crutches and/or braces or other prosthetic device provided that the customer is dependent on them

Smart Bags

Carriage of Smart Bags powered by a lithium battery or lithium battery power bank will only be accepted in accordance with the following conditions:

  1. Checked Baggage: Smart bags are permitted as checked baggage provided the battery is removed and carried in the cabin; if the battery cannot be removed, the Smart bag may not be carried as checked baggage.
  2. Cabin Baggage: Smart bags are allowed in the cabin (weight and size permitting), as long as the battery is removable. The battery does not have to be removed in flight as long as the Smart bag is completely powered off. If the battery is not removable, the Smart bag cannot be carried on Gulf Air.

Travelling with other airlines on your Gulf air ticket

If your Gulf Air itinerary includes flights operated by other airlines, different baggage rules may apply.

Please check your ticket for details of your baggage allowance for each flight in your itinerary.

Gulf Air Codeshare flights operated by American Airlines to and from the USA or Canada

Falcon Gold

Two checked pieces, provided that the total linear dimensions (height + width + depth) for each bag does not exceed 158 cm (62 inches) and the weight of each bag does not exceed 32 kg (70 lbs).

Economy

Two checked pieces, provided the total linear dimensions (height + width + depth) for both bags added together does not exceed 273 cm (107 inches) and the weight of each bag does not exceed 23 kg (50 lbs).

Bags that weigh more than 23 kg (50 lbs) but below 32 kg (70 lbs) will incur a fixed overweight charge of USD50.00 for economy passengers. Any passengers wishing to carry an additional piece(s) over and above their free allowance, will be charged as per American Airlines policy which is available on their website.

Infants

Regardless of class infants will be allowed one checked piece, provided that the total linear dimensions (height + width + depth) does not exceed 158 cm (62 inches) and the weight of the bag does not exceed 23 kg (50 lbs).

Gulf Air tickets issued for travel on other Airlines to/from the USA and Canada

If you purchase a Gulf Air ticket to/from the USA or Canada that involves a connection with a flight operated by another airline (for American Airlines see policy above), your free baggage allowance is based on a combination of how many piece(s) you can carry and a maximum weight per individual piece. Individual airlines have varying policies on this, please refer to their website to ensure you have the most up to date information as to your baggage allowance and any potential charges before you set out on your journey. IATA rates apply for any piece over the free baggage allowance.

Gulf Air tickets issued for travel on other Airlines excluding the USA and Canada

If you purchase a Gulf Air ticket that involves a connection with a flight operated by an airline which is not a Gulf Air codeshare partner, the baggage allowance of that operating airline applies to their flight irrespective of where you have commenced your journey. Please see the baggage allowance on the website of the airline you will be travelling on and plan accordingly.

Separate tickets or no through check-in facility to an onward destination

Please note that if you hold separate tickets for your journey or if your baggage cannot be checked through to your final destination, you will be subject to the applicable baggage allowance of the airline operating each flight.

Excess Baggage

If your baggage exceeds the free baggage allowances, you may purchase your pre-paid excess baggage at discounted rates online or through your local Gulf Air office. Alternatively, excess baggage can be purchased at competitive rates at the airport by our Customer Service staff.

If you are making your entire journey on Gulf Air operated flights, the following excess baggage rates apply. This depends on the 'zone' of your origin and destination within the entire Gulf Air network. You can calculate it yourself and plan it ahead to suit your travel budget.

If you are travelling with other airlines on your Gulf Air ticket, standard IATA baggage rates will apply. Our Check-in Agents will be able to assist you should you require further information. Terms and Conditions

Changes:

  • Changes to the purchased baggage allowance can be done up to 24 hours prior the departure time
  • The passenger may change the flight voluntarily and utilise the prepaid excess baggage for other flights or other sectors
  • The purchased excess baggage cannot be transferred to another passenger 
  • The purchased Prepaid Excess Baggage will be valid for one year from the purchase date

Refunds:

Please note the circumstances under which we will not be able to refund: 

  • Voluntary (where Gulf Air is not the cause for such cancellations) cancellation of the booking
  • Voluntary cancellation of the excess baggage allowance

A refund would be provided: 

  • In all the involuntary situations (where Gulf Air is the cause for such cancellations), where the customer was unable to travel.

Pay with miles

Special Baggage

Gulf Air offers free baggage allowance for passengers carrying sports equipment, musical instruments or special baggage.  Each item must not exceed the maximum linear dimensions of 158cm. Excess baggage charges will apply to articles exceeding these limitations.

The permitted items are described as follows:

Zamzam Water

A maximum of 5 kgs of Zamzam Water can be checked-in. Kindly ensure that all items are wrapped/packaged securely (this service is provided in the departure area of Jeddah and Madinah airports).

A total not exceeding 5 kgs, will be carried free of charge in addition to your existing baggage allowance.

 

Bicycles

One non-motorised bicycle, which must be placed in a specially designed protective bag, case or cardboard box. Pedals must be removed, handlebars fixed in line with the frame and tyres must be deflated to avoid potential damage. The bicycle box, not exceeding 15 kgs, will be carried free of charge in addition to your existing baggage allowance.

Golf Clubs

One golf bag containing one set of clubs, balls, one pair of golf shoes and one umbrella, which all must be packed within a specially designed golf travel bag. 

The golf bag, not exceeding 15 kgs, will be carried free of charge in addition to your existing baggage allowance

 

Surfboards and Windsurf boards and sails; kayaks and hand gliders

Gulf Air shall accept these items as long as each piece does not exceed 32 kg and is within the dimensions set for extraordinary baggage 190 cm (75”) x 75 cm (20.5”) x 65 cm (25.5”). Items larger than the specified dimensions, will not be accepted as checked baggage, they will be carried as cargo in these circumstances. Please visit [Gulf Air Cargo] for further details.

 

SCUBA Diving Equipment

Scuba diving equipment may contain up to one empty cylinder tank
and harness, one regulator, one tank pressure gauge, one mask, snorkel, a pair of fins, one Buoyancy Control Device (BCD), one diving lamp (disconnected or battery removed).

Please note the cylinder tank must be empty, with the regulators removed and valves placed in open position.The equipment not exceeding 15 KGs, will be carried free of charge in addition to your free baggage allowance

 

Paragliding and Parachuting

Paragliding: one canopy/wing, one harness and one helmet packed securely into a rucksack.
Parachuting: one parachute securely packed.

These items will be loaded in the hold - they are not permitted in the cabin

 

Kite-surfing

One board and sail in a bag.

 

Ten pin bowling

A purpose designed bowling ball bag containing a maximum of 4 bowling balls.

 

Hockey/Lacrosse

 Sticks, balls and pads carried in a purpose made kit bag.

 

Tennis

One racket kit bag containing rackets and balls.

 

Archery

One equipment bag containing one bow, one quiver and arrows

 

Fishing

Two rods, one reel, one pair of fishing boots, one tackle and one landing net in a purpose made bag.

 

Musical Instruments

Instruments must be packed in a purpose designed travel bag and adequately protected.

 

Television

A TV of maximum 50 inches is permitted. Larger sizes must be carried as [Cargo].

 

 

Ski Equipments

Snow boards: one snowboard plus boots in a purpose designed board bag. 
Snow skis: one pair of skis and poles in a purpose designed ski bag in addition to one pair of ski boots in a boot bag.

Prohibited Items

To ensure your safety and that of others, there are certain restrictions to the items which you may carry on board the aircraft, both in your checked and cabin baggage. The information below is intended as a guide only. Should you have any queries about what you are allowed to carry, please contact Gulf Air for clarification.

Totally forbidden items include:

  • Disabling devices containing mace, pepper spray etc. containing an irritant or incapacitating substance;
  • Electro shock weapons containing explosives, compressed gases, lithium batteries etc.
  • Self-balancing scooters with lithium batteries;
  • Security-type attaché cases or briefcases incorporating dangerous goods such as lithium batteries and/or pyrotechnic materials;
  • Explosives, fireworks, flares, ‘strike anywhere' matches;
  • Compressed gases;
  • Corrosives;
  • Flammable liquids;
  • Radioactive material;
  • Poisons and infectious substances;
  • Petrol-operated tools or equipment.

Carriage of Small Vehicles

Small lithium-powered vehicles such as hoverboards and segways are forbidden for carriage on Gulf Air as checked or hand baggage. If they are brought to the airport, please note that they shall be removed from you and Gulf Air shall not be responsible for shipping the device on your behalf. In addition, any of these items found in checked baggage after check in, shall be removed.

Prohibited items in checked baggage:

The following items may not be carried in your checked baggage, but may be taken in the cabin either in your hand baggage or on your person:

  • Spare lithium batteries for portable electronic devices (maximum of two);
  • Safety matches, cigarette lighters (one, small, carried on person);
  • Electronic (e-) cigarettes (note that these are not permitted to be used on board)
  • Mercury thermometers;
  • Mobility aids with lithium ion batteries;

Items Removed by Security

These are items which have been removed from a person by Airport Authorities or Gulf Air personnel due to the fact that they may present a risk to either the safety or the security of an aircraft.
Items listed in the ‘Accepted Dangerous Goods Table' are not included in this description.
Examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Toy or replica firearms
  • Knives; kitchen or flick
  • Offensive chains
  • Workman's tools such as hammers, spanners, wrenches

These may only be carried in a customer's checked baggage, but may be refused by Airport Security staff.

Khanjars

A Khanjar is a valuable ceremonial dagger, usually made of precious metal, which is often considered an integral part of some Arabic nations' national dress.

They may only be carried in a customer's checked baggage, but may be refused by Airport Security staff

Carriage of Lithium Batteries

Due to their nature, the carriage of Lithium batteries as separate entities is restricted. Please note the following, taken from Table 2.3.A of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations Manual.

'Lithium ion batteries with a Watt-hour rating exceeding 100Wh but not exceeding 160Wh for portable electronic devices. No more than two (2) spare batteries may be carried in carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. Equipment containing such batteries may be in checked or carry-on baggage.'

Carriage of Electronic Cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are not permitted to be carried in a customer's checked baggage; they may only be carried in carry-on baggage or on the person but are not permitted to be used on board the aircraft.

Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGS)

To protect our customers from the threat of liquid explosives, there are restrictions on the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels on flights which limit the quantity of any liquids, aerosols or gels that are taken into the cabin of the aircraft by customers and crew. They do not apply to checked baggage. Certain medicines and baby products that are required during the flight may be exempt.
The general regulations for LAGs are that customers will only be permitted to carry liquids, aerosols and gels in containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml. These containers must be packed in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag of not more than 1 litre in capacity (approximately 20cm x 20cm). Only one re-sealable plastic bag will be permitted per customer. The plastic bag containing the liquids, aerosols and gels must be presented separately at the security screening point for x-ray.

Carriage of Party Crackers on Gulf Air

Gulf Air prohibits the carriage of party crackers on its aircraft in both checked and hand baggage.

Wheelchairs & Mobility Aids with Wet Cell Batteries.

Wheelchairs or other battery-powered mobility aids with wet cell batteries may only be transported as Dangerous Goods through the cargo department.

List of prohibited items according to EU regulation

Passengers with Cabin Baggage: 

Without prejudice to applicable safety rules, passengers are not permitted to carry the following articles into security restricted areas and on board an aircraft.

A.) Guns, firearms and other devices that discharge projectiles – devices capable, or appearing capable, of being used to cause serious injury by discharging a projectile, including:

Pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, toy guns and replicas capable of being mistaken for real weapons Compressed air and CO2 guns, Pellet guns, component parts of firearms, crossbows and arrows Signal flare and starter pistols, harpoon and spear guns slingshots and catapults  
 

B.) Stunning devices – devices designed specifically to stun or immobilize, including:

Stun guns, stun batons, mace, tear gas, tasers other disabling and incapacitating gases and sprays like animal repellent, capsicum and acid sprays Animal stunners and animal killers

 

C.) Objects with a sharp point or sharp edge, capable of being used to cause serious injury

Ice picks and axes, knives with blades of more than 6 cm razor blades, Martial arts equipment, Swords and sabres, box cutters, hatchets, bolt and nail guns, Cleavers, Scissors with blades of more than 6 cm as measured from the fulcrum

 

D.) Workmen's tools-tools capable apable of being used either to cause serious

Injury or to threaten the safety of aircraft, including: Crowbars, Drills and Saws including cordless portable power tools Blowtorches, tools with a blade or shaft of more than 6 cm

 

E.) Blunt instruments - objects capable of being used to cause injury when used to hit, including:  

Baseball and softball bats, Clubs and batons, billy clubs, blackjacks, Nightsticks, Martial arts equipment  

 

F.) Explosives and incendiary substances and devices capable, or appearing capable, of being used to cause 

serious injury or to pose a threat to the safety of aircraft, including: Ammunition, Blasting caps, detonators and fuses, replica or imitation explosive devices, Mines, grenades and other explosive military stores, Fireworks and other pyrotechnics smoke-generating canisters and smoke-generating cartridges, Dynamite, gunpowder and plastic explosives.

 

Hold Baggage

Passengers are not permitted to carry the following articles in their hold baggage:

Explosives and incendiary substances and devices capable of being used to cause serious injury or to pose a threat to  the safety of aircrafts, including:

Ammunition, blasting caps, detonators and fuses, mines, grenades and other military explosives Fireworks and pyrotechnics smoke-generating canisters and smoke-generating cartridges Dynamite gunpowder and plastic explosives.

Safety Note For Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Users

In light of the recent safety concerns raised about the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices, with immediate effect, passengers must not carry these either on their person or as baggage. 

Animals On Board

All pets and animals, with the exception of falcons, are not allowed as in-cabin or checked baggage on any Gulf Air flight, and must be booked to travel with the Gulf Air Cargo department.

Considerations for passengers traveling with falcons

  • By hand: falcon must be hooded and attached by rope or chain to the handler. A maximum of one (1) falcon may be carried per handler. Falcon can be carried in both Falcon Gold and Economy class cabins. Charges will be one (1) excess baggage piece.
  • On a perch: a maximum of two (2) falcons per perch; an additional one (1) can be carried by the handler. An extra seat must be purchased for every perch; for each additional two (2) falcons a seat purchase is required. The perch must be attached to the seat frame by the airport ground staff and the falcons attached to the perch. There will be no free baggage allowance for the extra seats purchased
  • In a cage: a maximum of two (2) falcons per cage, which must be according to IATA LAR regulation. An extra seat must be purchased for each cage. Cages are only permitted in the Economy class cabin. The cage must not be wider than the seat width or higher than the seatback with a total weight limit of 75 KGs. The cage must be secured properly on the seat by the airport ground staff using seat belts and lashing if required.
