The capital of India's Kerala state is a bustling seaport,
crowded like all India's cities with people who seem to be going somewhere
but one is never sure where.
Trivandrum is the gateway to Kerala, a beautiful, lush and verdant state which
has gradually become a most popular tourism centre. Kerala reaches from the
southern tip of India at Cape Comorin along the Malabar coast, bounded inland
by the Cardamom Hills. The Malabar Coast itself is a spectacular line of almost
continuous, coconut palm-fringed golden sands, and has progressively attracted
resort developments as the state and federal governments have invested in attracting.tourism
dollars.
The first of these resorts was and is the splendid Kovalom Beach Hotel and
Resort about 15 km south of Trivandrum. The hotel on its rocky outcrop was
developed on the site of a maharajah's summer palace. Inland waterways and
lagoons are hidden behind the fringe of palm-trees, where whole villages make
coire cord from the coconut husks. Boat trips are available to navigate the
lagoons.
Further inland there are spectacular views and walks in the hills. From Trivandrum
you can head north to Cochin, Coimbatore, Mysore and Bangalore, or cross the
hills into the southern parts of Tamil Nadu on the east coast.
